AUTHORITY PROTOCOL
Banks do not evaluate disputes emotionally.
Every transaction is classified into one of three categories:
- authorized transaction
- recurring/subscription billing
- unauthorized/fraud
If your dispute does not match how the bank classifies the charge, it can be automatically denied — even if the charge looks suspicious.
EXPLANATION: WHY ETSY CHARGES APPEAR
Etsy uses a centralized payment processing system called **Etsy Payments**. When you buy an item from a seller in Germany and another from a seller in Texas, both charges appear generically as "ETSY.COM." This centralization is for security, but it creates a lack of statement transparency.
The Delayed Capture: Etsy often authorizes your card at the moment of the order, but doesn't "Capture" the funds until the artisan marks the item as 'Dispatched'. If a seller takes 4 days to make your item, you will see the final withdrawal hit your bank several days after you placed the order.
Seller Fee Extraction: If you are a seller yourself, Etsy often withdraws your monthly **Merchant Fees** directly from your linked card if your current shop balance is negative. These fees can look like consumer purchases but are actually institutional billing.
You should read the full Etsy charge explanation to see how to differentiate these descriptors.
BANK CLASSIFICATION LOGIC
Banks look for established "Merchant Trust" scores. Since Etsy has billions of successful transactions, the bank's automated systems automatically categorize any withdrawal from them as "Authorized." If you report this as "Fraud" but have ordered from Etsy in the past year, the bank will find a "Classification Discrepancy" and deny your claim instantly.
WHAT THIS MEANS FOR YOU
It means your account history is being used to judge the legitimacy of the new charge. If the amount on your statement is an odd cent (e.g. $xx.20), it is almost certainly a seller listing fee renewal. Filing for fraud on a listing fee is a technical error that can get your bank account flagged for suspicious report activity. You must have the correct what this charge actually is classification.
URGENCY WARNING
If this charge continues and is not handled correctly, your bank may treat it as authorized.
At that point:
• refunds become significantly harder
• repeated disputes may be rejected
• your claim can lose priority
WHAT YOU SHOULD DO NOW
A successful marketplace audit requires checking both your buyer and seller profiles. Follow this sequence:
- The 'Purchases' Audit: Log into Etsy > Purchases and Reviews. Check every item bought in the last 45 days.
- The 'Payment Account' Review: If you have an Etsy shop, go to Shop Manager > Finances. Review any 'Listing Fees' ($0.20) or 'Ads Fees' billed to your card.
- Identify the Merchant ID: Use our identification tool to find the specific business name hidden behind the 'ETSY' descriptor.
FORCED DECISION MOMENT
If you are not 100% sure what caused this charge, do NOT dispute yet.
Choosing the wrong dispute reason is one of the most common reasons people lose their claim.

ETSY BILLING FAQ
Why does Etsy charge me $0.20?
This is a standard 'Listing Renewal' fee. It hit your card if you have a shop and an item has been active for 4 months.
Can I get a refund for a gift I never received?
Yes. Etsy's 'Purchase Protection Program' covers orders up to $250. You must use the 'Resolution Center' inside Etsy, not your bank, to claim this.
How do I see who I bought from on Etsy?
Log in and go to 'Purchases and Reviews'. Each entry shows the shop name and a copy of the receipt.
